Set at the beginning of the 70s, Red Island follows ten-year-old Thomas, living on one of the last remaining military bases amidst a hedonistic group of French armed forces in Madagascar. Influenced by his reading of intrepid comic book heroine Fantômette, Thomas sweeps with a curious glance what surrounds him, discovering the hidden and tangled political and s–ual lives of the colonizers and the colonized. Red Island 2024
Red Island (French: L’Île rouge) is a coming-of-age drama film directed by Robin Campillo (They Came Back, Eastern Boys, 120 BPM). The screenplay is written by Campillo and Gilles Marchand, with Jean-Luc Raharimanana serving as script consultant. It is set to be released by Film Movement in select US theaters on August 16, 2024.
The film is produced by Marie-Ange Luciani and stars Nadia Tereszkiewicz, Quim Gutiérrez, and Charlie Vauselle. Red Island had its world premiere at Le Chesnay in France on May 25, 2023, followed by a wider release in French cinemas on May 31, 2023.
