S.W.A.T. is an American procedural action drama television series created by Aaron Rahsaan Thomas and Shawn Ryan. It is based on the 1975 television series and 2003 film of the same name. The new series premiered on CBS on November 2, 2017, and exists in a shared universe with the FX crime drama The Shield, which Ryan also created. S.W.A.T. has been renewed through to a seventh and final season, which premiered on February 16, 2024.
The series centers on Los Angeles S.W.A.T. Sergeant II Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson, a lifelong LA local and former Marine, who is assigned to lead a highly-skilled unit in the community where he grew up. Torn between loyalty to where he was raised and allegiance to his brothers in blue, he strives to bridge the divide between these two worlds.
