The Beast (French: La Bête) is a 2023 science fiction romantic drama film directed and written by Bertrand Bonello (Something Organic, The Pornographer, Tiresia, On War, House of Tolerance, Saint Laurent, Nocturama, Zombi Child, Coma). The screenplay is written by Bonello, Guillaume Bréaud, and Benjamin Charbit; loosely based on the 1903 novella “The Beast in the Jungle” by Henry James. It stars Léa Seydoux and George MacKay, with Guslagie Malanda and Dasha Nekrasova in supporting roles. The Beast was released theatrically in France on February 7, 2024 and is scheduled to be released in select US theaters on April 5, 2024, by Janus Films.
The sci-fi drama mystery is a co-production between France and Canada. The film is produced Bertrand Bonello and Justin Taurand with production companies Les Films du Bélier, My New Picture, Sons of Manual, Arte France Cinéma, and AMI Paris. The Beast had its world premiere on September 3, 2023 at the 80th Venice International Film Festival as part of the official competition. The acclaimed film has picked up two wins, namely Best Actress (Seydoux) at the Valladolid International Film Festival and Prix Special du Jury – Competition Internationale at the La Roche-sur-Yon International Film Festival.
The Beast is set in the year is 2044, when artificial intelligence controls all facets of a stoic society as humans routinely “erase” their feelings. Hoping to eliminate pain caused by their past-life romances, Gabrielle (Seydoux) continually falls in love with different incarnations of Louis (MacKay). Will the process allow Gabrielle to fully connect with Louis in the present, or are the two doomed to repeat their previous fates? The story unfolds over three distinct periods: 1910, 2014, and 2044.
