Shirley is an American biographical drama film written and directed by John Ridley (Cold Around the Heart, Jimi: All Is by My Side, Needle in a Timestack). It had been released in select US theaters on March 15, 2024 and will have its streaming debut on Netflix on March 22, 2024.
The film is produced by Regina King and Reina King, Elizabeth Haggard, Anikah McLaren, and John Ridley. The film stars Regina King in the title role, alongside Lance Reddick (in his final film), Terrence Howard, Lucas Hedges, and Brian Stokes Mitchell.
Shirley tracks the dynamic 1972 presidential run of Shirley Chisholm, America’s first Black congresswoman. It is based on the true story of Chisholm and offers a behind-the-scenes portrait of one of the most ground-breaking political leaders during a seminal period in modern American history.
