Hamlet 2024
Hamlet is directed by filmmaker and theater director Sean Mathias, who previously directed the 1997 historical drama Bent. Hamlet, shortened from “The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark”, is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare sometime between 1599 and 1601. It is Shakespeare’s longest play. This new version of Hamlet will be shown in UK cinemas by Kaleidoscope for a special one night event, including a recorded Q&A with Ian McKellen and Director Sean Mathias, on February 27, 2024. No US release date has been set yet.
The film is produced by Bill Kenwright, with Naomi George and David Gilbery serving as executive producers. Ian McKellen reprises his role as Hamlet. Jonathan Hyde, Jenny Seagrove, Steven Berkoff, Francesca Annis, and Frances Barber also star.
Hamlet was filmed at the Theatre Royal Windsor in 2021. In a uniquely modern spin, the film utilises nearly every room of the Theatre Royal Windsor to transform it into the immortal Elsinore Castle, from basement dungeon to roof-top battlement.
