Freud’s Last Session 2023
Freud’s Last Session is a drama film directed by writer and filmmaker Matt Brown (Ropewalk, The Man Who Knew Infinity), from a screenplay he co-wrote with Mark St. Germain. It is based on the stage play of the same name by St. Germain, which itself is based upon the book The Question of God, by Armand Nicholi. Freud’s Last Session is scheduled to be released by Sony Pictures Classics in select US theaters on December 22, 2023.
The film is produced by Alan Greisman, Hannah Leader, Tristan Lynch, Rick Nicita, Robert Stillman, and Meg Thomson. It had its world premiere at the 2023 AFI Fest on October 27, 2023. Freud’s Last Session stars Anthony Hopkins, Matthew Goode, Liv Lisa Fries, Jodi Balfour, Jeremy Northam, and Orla Brady.
Freud’s Last Session is set in September 1939, days after Hitler invades Poland. As the threat of German bombs rattles England, Sigmund Freud watches the world go mad. Having fled Nazi forces invading his homeland, Freud has brought his family from Vienna to London, where he’s visited by author and Oxford theologian C.S. Lewis. Lewis – whose Chronicles of Narnia fantasy novels would later gain worldwide acclaim – is an atheist turned Christian now hoping to confront the “Father of Psychoanalysis” about the gap between science and religion, faith and logic, and how studying the mind may miss the path of the soul. Through the colorful, fictional day-long debate, the two work to see the other’s point of view while Britain enters WWII.
