Faraway Downs is an epic adventure limited series directed by Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet, Strictly Ballroom, The Great Gatsby, Elvis) and co-written by Luhrmann, Stuart Beattie, Richard Flanagan, and Ronald Harwood; based on a story by Luhrmann. Faraway Downs is the reimagining of Luhrmann’s 2008 film Australia told in 6 parts. The miniseries is set for a streaming debut on Hulu on November 26, 2023.
The adventure romance drama is executive produced by Catherine Knapman, Luhrmann, Catherine Martin, and Schuyler Weiss. Faraway Downs stars Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Bryan Brown, David Wenham, Jack Thompson, and Brandon Walters.
Faraway Downs follows English aristocrat Lady Sarah Ashley (Kidman), who travels halfway across the world to confront her wayward husband and sell an unusual asset: a million-acre cattle ranch in the Australian Outback called ‘Faraway Downs’. After the death of her husband, a ruthless Australian cattle baron named King Carney (Brown), plots to take her land. Lady Ashley then reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn cattle drover (Jackman) to protect her ranch. The sweeping adventure romance is explored through the eyes of young Nullah (Brandon Walters), a bi-racial Indigenous Australian child. Together the trio experiences four life-altering years, a love affair between Lady Ashley and the Drover, and the unavoidable impact of World War II on Northern Australia.
