With the courtesan, the King rediscovers his taste for life and decides to make her his official favorite. She then moves to Versailles, where her relationship with the king scandalises the Court.

Jeanne du Barry is a historical drama film directed by actress and filmmaker Maïwenn (Pardonnez-moi, All About Actresses, Polisse, My King, DNA), from a screenplay she co-wrote with Teddy Lussi-Modeste and Nicholas Livecchi. It opened in French cinemas on May 16, 2023 and screened in other parts of Europe since then. Jeanne du Barry is set to be released in select US theaters on September 29, 2023.
The biographical film is a co-production between France, Belgium and the United Kingdom. It was produced by Why Not Productions and Depp’s IN.2 Film. Producers include Pascal Caucheteux, Konstantin Elkin, and Gregoire Sorlat, while lead stars Maiwenn and Johnny Depp serve as co-producers, along with Thomas Langmann. With its budget of $22.4 million, Jeanne du Barry was one of the most expensive French films of 2022, and one of only three French films with a budget over 10 million euros.
Jeanne du Barry had its world premiere as the opening film at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival on May 16, 2023, where it received a seven minute standing ovation. It is the first film wherein Johnny Depp speaks entirely in French, and his first film in three years after Minamata (2020).
