Beast movie
War Pony (aka Beast) is a 2022 American drama film directed by Riley Keough and Gina Gammell – in both of their respective feature directorial debuts. The screenplay is written by Keough, Gammell, Franklin Sioux Bob, and Bill Reddy. It is scheduled to be released in select US theaters on July 28, 2023, by Momentum Pictures.
The drama film is produced by Val Abel, Sacha Ben Harroche, Bear Damen, Salim El Arja, Gina Gammell, Bert Hamelinck, Riley Keough, Michael Manasseri, Sergey Shtern, Elaine Thomas, Willi White, and Ryan Zacarias. War Pony had its world premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section on May 21, 2022 and won the Caméra d’Or (Golden Camera), which is awarded for the best first feature film.
Since its Cannes premiere, War Pony then won several awards from different film festivals including CineVision Award – Honorable Mention at the Munich Film Festival; Propeller of Motovun – Best Film at the Motovun Film Festival; Jury Prize and Revelations Prize at the Deauville Film Festival; Special Mention – International Feature Film at the Zurich Film Festival; Punto de Encuentero Award – Best Feature Film at the Valladolid International Film Festival; and Prize of the City of Torino – Best Actor and Holden Award for Best Script at the Torino Film Festival.
War Pony tells the story of Bill and Matho, two Lakota boys growing up on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. At 23, Bill (Jojo Bapteise Whiting) just wants to make something of himself, determined to carve his way to the “American Dream”. Meanwhile, 12-year-old Matho (LaDainian Crazy Thunder) can’t wait to become a man. Desperate for approval from his young, unavailable father, a series of destructive decisions turns Matho’s life upside down and he finds himself unequipped to deal with the harsh realities of the adult world.
