The Beasts 2023
The Beasts (aka As bestas) is a Spanish-French thriller film directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen (8 Dates, Stockholm, May God Save Us, The Candidate, Mother), who co-wrote the screenplay with Isabel Peña. It is set to be released by Greenwich Entertainment on July 28, 2023 in select US theaters and on September 26, 2023 on VOD.
The acclaimed film is produced by Ignasi Estape, Anne-Laure Labadie, Jean Labadie, Nacho Lavilla, Thomas Pibarot, Rodrigo Sorogoyen, Sandra Tapia, and Eduardo Villanueva. It had its world premiere at the 75th Cannes Film Festival on May 26 2022, and already opened in France on July 20, 2022 and in Spain on November 11, 2022.
The Beasts earned 17 nominations to the 37th Goya Awards, winning in 9 categories, including Best Film, Director, Original Screenplay, and Leading Actor (Denis Ménochet). It also won the César Award for Best Foreign Film. So far, the film has received a total of 51 wins and 24 nominations.
Inspired by real events involving a Dutch couple in Santoalla, the plot of The Beasts follows a French couple named Vincent and Olga, who settled in the Galician countryside. There they lead a quiet life, grow their vegetables, and rehabilitate abandoned houses, although their coexistence with the locals is not as idyllic as they wish. Their opposition to a wind farm project will accentuate the disagreements with the neighbors, especially with the brothers Xan and Lorenzo, taking coexistence to a situation of no return.
