Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is an American computer-animated coming-of-age fantasy action comedy film directed by Kirk DeMicco (Space Chimps, The Croods, Vivo) and co-directed by Faryn Pearl. The screenplay is written by Pam Brady, Kirk DeMicco, Elliott DiGuiseppi, and Brian C. Brown, from a story by Brady. It is set to be released in US theaters nationwide on June 30, 2023 by Universal Pictures.
The film was reportedly inspired by the John Hughes films, Easy A (2010), Lady Bird (2017), and Booksmart (2019). Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken follows awkward 16-year-old Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor), who is desperate to fit in at Oceanside High, but who mostly just feels invisible. She’s math-tutoring her skater-boy crush (Jaboukie Young-White), who only seems to admire her for her fractals, and she’s prevented from hanging out with the cool kids at the beach because her over-protective supermom (Toni Collette), has forbade Ruby from ever getting in the water. But when she breaks her mom’s #1 rule, Ruby will discover that she is a direct descendant of the warrior Kraken queens and is destined to inherit the throne from her commanding grandmother (Jane Fonda), the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas.
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is produced by Kelly Cooney Cilella with DreamWorks Animation. It features an ensemble voice cast including Lana Condor, Toni Collette, Jane Fonda, Annie Murphy, Sam Richardson, and Colman Domingo. This hilarious, heartfelt action comedy will premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France on June 15, 2023.
