Set during the early days of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship, Chile ’76 tells the story of Carmen (Aline Kuppenheim), who leads a sheltered upper middle class existence. Startattle.com – 1976 movie.
Carmen heads to her summer house in the off-season to supervise its renovation while also performing local charitable works through her church. When the family priest asks her to take care of an injured young man he has been sheltering in secret, Carmen is inadvertently drawn into the world of the Chilean political opposition and must face real-world threats she is unprepared to handle, with potentially disastrous consequences for her and her entire family.

The film is produced by Alejandra Garcia, Juan Pablo Gugliotta, Dominga Sotomayor, Nathalia Videla Peña, Andres Wood, and Omar Zúñiga. Chile ’76 premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival on May 6, 2022 and was released in Chilean cinemas on October 20, 2022. The film stars Aline Kuppenheim, Alejandro Goic, Nicolás Sepúlveda, Hugo Medina, and Carmen Gloria Martínez.
Chile ’76 won five awards from different film festivals including Best-Ibero American Film at the Palm Springs International Film Festival; Best International Debut at the Jerusalem Film Festival; Sutherland Award – First Feature Competition at the London Film Festival; City of Athens Award – Best Director at the Athens International Film Festival; and Best Actress Award for Aline Kuppenheim at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
