Carmen 2023
Carmen is a musical drama film directed by French dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied in his feature directorial debut. The screenplay is written by Loïc Barrère, Alexander Dinelaris Jr., and Millepied from a screen story by Millepied and Barrère; and from a previous screenplay by Lisa Loomer and novel by Prosper Merimee. Carmen is set to be released by Sony Classics on April 21, 2023 in select US theaters (NY & LA).
The film is produced by Rosemary Blight, Dimitri Rassam, and Mimi Valdes. Carmen had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2022. Carmen stars Melissa Barrera, Paul Mescal, Elsa Pataky, Rossy de Palma, and Nicole da Silva.
Millepied’s Carmen is “a complete re-imagining” of Bizet’s opera of the same name, that ignores the opera’s plot and setting, taking only selected lyrics from its libretto. The film features an original score composed by Nicholas Britell and songs written and composed by Brittell, Julieta Venegas, Taura Stinson, and Tracy “The DOC” Curry.
