The Origin of Evil (French: L’Origine du mal) is a French and Canadian thriller drama film, directed by Sébastien Marnier (Faultless, School’s Out). The screenplay is written by Sébastien Marnier in collaboration with Fanny Burdino. It is set to be released by IFC Films in select US theaters and on VOD on September 22, 2023.
The film is produced by Caroline Bonmarchand, with Luc Déry and Kim McCraw serving as co-producers. The Origin of Evil had its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2022 and had been released in France on October 5, 2022. The film stars Laure Calamy as Stéphane and Jacques Weber as Serge. The cast also includes Dominique Blanc, Doria Tillier, Suzanne Clément, Clotilde Mollet, Céleste Brunnquell, Véronique Ruggia, and Naidra Ayadi.
