Kya was the late Willie Spence’s duet partner in American Idol 2021 and they became even closer friends after the show, up until Willie’s tragic car accident in 2022.
Willie was going to come with Kya to this audition, and they’d even picked her song together for Kya’s second chance on American Idol. Kya’s voice cracks with emotion the whole time during her performance, and the judges can’t help but cry along with her.

The twenty-first season of the reality show singing competition American Idol premiered on February 19, 2023, on the ABC television network. It is the sixth season to air on ABC since the series’ revival. Ryan Seacrest returned as host, and Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie returned as judges. The Idol Across America virtual auditions program returned from the previous two seasons. The remote auditions took place from August 3 to September 14, 2022, as well as a number of open-call auditions, and from these, the producers selected the contestants who can then audition in front of the judges.
The Color Purple is a musical with a book by Marsha Norman and music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray. Based on the 1982 novel of the same name by Alice Walker and its 1985 film adaptation, the show follows the journey of Celie, a woman from the early to mid-20th century.
