The Whale is an American drama film directed by acclaimed filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, The Wrestler, Black Swan, Noah, Mother!) from a screenplay by Samuel D. Hunter based on Hunter’s 2012 play of the same name. It is scheduled to be released in US theaters on December 9, 2022, by A24.
This drama film is produced Darren Aronofsky, Jeremy Dawson, and Ari Handel. The Whale had its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on September 4, 2022, where it received a six-minute standing ovation and won four awards, namely the Premio CinemaSarà Award, INTERFILM Award for Promoting Interreligious Dialogue, Leoncino d’Oro Agiscuola Award, and Sorriso Diverso Venezia Award – Best Film in a Foreign Language. It also received the Rare Pearl Award at the Denver International Film Festival; Audience Award – US Cinema at the Mill Valley Film Festival; and Junior Jury award at the Montclair Film Festival. The Whale stars Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins, and Samantha Morton.
The Whale tells the story of Charlie, a 600 lb (270 kg) middle-aged reclusive English teacher, who tries to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter. The father and daughter grew apart after Charlie left his family for a man, who later died. To overcome pain and guilt, Charlie resorted to binge eating, which resulted in his current weight.
