The Drover’s Wife movie
The Legend of Molly Johnson, aka as The Drover’s Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson or simply The Drover’s Wife, is an Australian revisionist Western drama film written and directed by Leah Purcell, who also stars in the eponymous role. It is Purcell’s feature directorial debut, followed by Here Out West and The Architect (pre-production). The Drover’s Wife is scheduled to be released in select US theaters and on VOD on August 19, 2022.
Leah Purcell also produced this Western drama, along with David Jowsey, Angela Littlejohn, Greer Simpkin, and Bain Stewart. The Legend of Molly Johnson had its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) on March 18, 2021 and opened across Australia on May 5, 2022. The film has won three awards so far: the Jury Grand Prize for Leah Purcell at the 2021 Asia Pacific Screen Awards and Best Producer as well as Best Writer/Screenplay at the 2021 Australian Screen Industry Network Awards (ASIN).
The plot of Purcell’s film is a reworking of Henry Lawson’s 1892 short story The Drover’s Wife, but deviates significantly from the original story as developed in Purcell’s earlier award-winning play and novel of the same name.
