Breaking, originally titled 892, is an American thriller drama film written and directed by Abi Damaris Corbin, in her second feature after directing the 2017 drama Actors Anonymous. The screenplay is written by Corbin and Kwame Kwei-Armah, based on the 2018 Task & Purpose article “They Didn’t Have to Kill Him” by Aaron Gell. Breaking is scheduled to be released in select US theaters on August 26, 2022, by Bleecker Street.
Based on a true story, Breaking is produced by Salman Al-Rashid, Mackenzie Fargo, Sam Frohman, Ashley Levinson, and Kevin Turen. The film had its world premiere under its original title at the Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2022, where it won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Ensemble Cast. The film also won the Jury Prize for Best Actor (John Boyega) and Best Feature Film at the Annapolis Film Festival; and the American Independents Competition at the Cleveland International Film Festival. Breaking stars John Boyega, Michael Kenneth Williams, Nicole Beharie, Selenis Leyva, Jeffrey Donovan, and Connie Britton.
