The Orville is an American science fiction comedy-drama television series created by and starring Seth MacFarlane as series protagonist Captain Ed Mercer, an officer in the Planetary Union’s line of exploratory space vessels in the 25th century. It premiered on September 10, 2017, and ran for two seasons on Fox. The third season premiered on Hulu on June 2, 2022.
The live-action, one-hour space adventure series is inspired primarily by Star Trek and its Next Generation successor. Set 400 years in the future, the series follows The Orville, a mid-level exploratory spaceship. Its crew, both human and alien, face the wonders and dangers of outer space, while also dealing with the familiar, often humorous problems of everyday life.
