Benedetta is a French and Dutch biographical drama film directed by acclaimed Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven (Business is Business, Turkish Delight, Katie Tippel, Soldier of Orange, Spetters, The 4th Man, RoboCop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Showgirls, Starship Troopers, Hollow Man, Black Book, Tricked, Elle). The screenplay is co-written by Verhoeven and David Birke, loosely based on the 1986 non-fiction book “Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy” by Judith C. Brown. Benedetta stars Virginie Efira, Charlotte Rampling, Daphne Patakia, Lambert Wilson, Olivier Rabourdin, and Clotilde Courau.

Benedetta 2021
Set in the 17th century, the main character of the film is Benedetta Carlini, an Italian nun in the abbey of a convent in Tuscany. She was considered to be mystical and venerated by her religious entourage. Benedetta was later arrested and judged for sapphism, for having a lesbian affair with another nun.
Benedetta is produced by Saïd Ben Saïd, Michel Merkt, and Jérôme Seydoux. The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on July 9, 2021, where it was nominated for the Palme d’Or and director Paul Verhoeven was nominated for Queer Palm. Benedetta is scheduled to be released by IFC Films in select US theaters on December 3, 2021 and on VOD on December 21, 2021.
Principal photography took place in Montepulciano, Italy. Other locations include Val d’Orcia and Bevagna, also in Italy, and the Silvacane Abbey and Le Thoronet Abbey, in France.
