The Tender Bar tells the story of J.R. (Tye Sheridan), a fatherless boy growing up in the glow of a bar where the bartender, his Uncle Charlie (Ben Affleck), is the sharpest and most colorful of an assortment of father figures. As the boy’s mother (Lily Rabe) struggles to provide her son with opportunities initially denied to her – and leave the home of her father (Christopher Lloyd) – J.R. soon begins to pursue his romantic and professional dreams – with one foot persistently placed in Uncle Charlie’s bar.
This American coming-of-age drama film is directed by American actor, film director, producer, screenwriter, and philanthropist George Clooney (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Good Night and Good Luck, Leatherheads, The Ides of March, The Monuments Men, Suburbicon, The Midnight Sky) from a screenplay by William Monahan. The film is an adaptation of the 2005 memoir of the same name by J. R. Moehringer, which recounts Moehringer’s life growing up in Long Island.
