The Black Phone follows Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, who is abducted by a k—er then trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. This American supernatural horror film is directed by Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Sinister, Deliver Us from Evil, Doctor Strange), who returns to his terror roots and partners again with Blumhouse. The screenplay is written by C. Robert Cargill and Derrickson, adapted from the 2004 award-winning short story of the same name by Joe Hill. The Black Phone stars Ethan Hawke as The Grabber, Mason Thames as Finney Shaw, and Madeleine McGraw as Gwen Shaw.

The Black Phone is produced by Jason Blum, Scott Derrickson, and C. Robert Cargill. The film had its world premiere at the Fantastic Fest on September 25, 2021. It is set to be theatrically released by Universal Pictures on February 4, 2022.
Scott Derrickson partnered with C. Robert Cargill on The Black Phone, after he announced his departure from directing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in January 2020 due to creative differences with Marvel Studios.
Filming for The Black Phone began in February 2021, with principal photography taking place in North Carolina.
