Being the Ricardos (aka Lucy and Desi) takes place over the course of a week during production of “I Love Lucy”, which sees Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz encounter a crisis that could jeopardize their careers and marriage.
This American biographical drama film is written and directed by acclaimed writer and filmmaker Aaron Sorkin (Molly’s Game, The Trial of the Chicago 7). Sorkin is best known for writing the screenplays of A Few Good Men, The American President, Charlie Wilson’s War, Moneyball, and Steve Jobs. Being the Ricardos stars Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem as Ball and Arnaz. The cast also includes J. K. Simmons, Jake Lacy, Nina Arianda, Alia Shawkat, Linda Lavin, Clark Gregg, and Tony Hale. Being the Ricardos is produced by Desi Arnaz Jr., Lucie Arnaz, Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Jenna Block, and Steve Tisch. It is scheduled to be released by Amazon Studios in select US theaters on December 10, 2021, prior to streaming on Prime Video on December 21, 2021.
In September 2015, the project was first announced, with Cate Blanchett set to star as Lucille Ball and Aaron Sorkin writing the screenplay. By January 2021, Blanchett had exited the project, with Nicole Kidman in negotiations to replace her and Javier Bardem in negotiations to portray Desi Arnaz.
Filming for Being the Ricardos began on March 29, 2021, in Los Angeles. Production cancelled filming at Chateau Marmont due to backlash against the establishment.
