The nineteenth season of the reality show singing competition American Idol premiered on February 14, 2021 on the ABC television network. It is the fourth season to air on ABC since the series reboot; Ryan Seacrest returns as host. Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie return as judges and Bobby Bones as mentor.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, the show offered its first ever live virtual auditions to aspiring contestants through its Idol Across America program using custom-built Zoom technology. The remote auditions took place from August 10 to October 28, 2020 in 50 states plus Washington, D.C. as well as a number of open call auditions, and from these the producers selected the contestants who can then audition in front of the judges.
“When You Wish Upon a Star” is a song written by Leigh Harline and Ned Washington for Walt Disney’s 1940 adaptation of Pinocchio. The original version was sung by Cliff Edwards in the character of Jiminy Cricket, and is heard over the opening credits and in the final scene of the film. The song has since become the representative song of The Walt Disney Company and used as such in the production logos at the beginning of many Disney films. The recording by Cliff Edwards and Chorus was released by Victor Records as catalogue number 261546 and 26477A (in the US) and by EMI on the His Master’s Voice Label as catalogue number BD 821.
