Moffie is set in 1981, when South Africa’s white minority government is embroiled in a conflict on the southern Angolan border. The film tells the story of Nicholas Van der Swart (Kai Luke Brummer), who must complete two years of compulsory military service to defend the apartheid regime. The threat of communism and “die swart gevaar” (the so-called black danger) is at an all-time high. But that’s not the only danger Nicholas faces. He must also survive the brutality of the army – something that becomes even more difficult when a connection is sparked between him and fellow recruit Dylan Stassen (Ryan de Villiers). This South African-British biographical war romantic drama film is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Oliver Hermanus (Shirley Adams, Beauty, The Endless River). The screenplay of Moffie is written by Hermanus and Jack Sidey, based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by André Carl van der Merwe.

Moffie is produced by Eric Abraham and Jack Sidey. The film first premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2019. IFC Films will release Moffie in select US theaters and on VOD on April 9, 2021.
The film had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on September 4, 2019. It also had its special screenings at other film festivals and received several nominations in various categories including a BAFTA Film Award nomination for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer (Jack Sidey). The film won the Dublin Film Critics Special Jury Prize for Oliver Hermanus at the Dublin International Film Festival 2020. It also bagged the Mermaid Award for Hermanus at the Thessaloniki Film Festival 2019.
