The nineteenth season of the reality show singing competition American Idol will premiere on February 14, 2021 on the ABC television network. It is the fourth season to air on ABC since the series reboot; Ryan Seacrest will return as host. Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie will return as judges and Bobby Bones will return as mentor.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, the show offered its first ever live virtual auditions to aspiring contestants through its Idol Across America program using custom-built Zoom technology. The remote auditions took place from August 10 to October 28, 2020 in 50 states plus Washington, D.C. as well as a number of open call auditions, and from these the producers selected the contestants who can then audition in front of the judges.

Laila Mach auditions for American Idol with her own, original song “I Hope,” inspired by Gabby Barrett’s song with the same title. Katy Perry calls Laila Mach’s song “a more deranged version” of Gabby’s, but quickly follows that by telling Laila that she has “exactly what it takes to be in this competition and go far.” Luke Bryan calls Laila’s performance “very impressive,” and Lionel gives it a “yes, yes, yes and YES!”
