The fifth season of the American television series The Masked Singer had its premiere on Fox on March 10, 2021.
Singer-songwriter Robin Thicke, television and radio personality Jenny McCarthy, actor and comedian Ken Jeong, and recording artist Nicole Scherzinger returned for their fifth season as panelists. Regular host Nick Cannon tested positive for COVID-19 a few days before production was set to begin in February 2021. Niecy Nash is currently the guest host for an unannounced number of episodes.
The season began with two groups of five, Group A and Group B, then will introduce a new twist in which “wild card” contestants will enter the competition throughout the run of the show for a chance to unseat another contestant. The contestants for Season 5 have a combined “26 Grammy nominations, nine multi-platinum singles, four Oscar nominations, three Super Bowl appearances, six gold medals and two world records among them”. Costumes for this season include Black Swan, Chameleon, Grandpa Monster, Phoenix, Piglet, Raccoon, Robopine, Russian Dolls, Seashell, and Snail. This season also includes a non-contestant mask called “Cluedle-Doo”, who will interrupt the show and give out new clues.
Mambo No. 5 is an instrumental mambo and jazz dance song originally composed and recorded by Cuban musician Dámaso Pérez Prado in 1949 and released the next year. Lou Bega’s cover of Mambo No. 5 was a summer hit during 1999 in most of Europe, including Great Britain, as well as in North America and Oceania. In France, it set a record by staying at number one for 20 weeks. The song reached number 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 on November 2, 1999, giving Bega his only top-40 hit in the United States.
