The Sloth was unmasked during the Finale of The Masked Dancer Season 1 (2021) after coming in as runner-up to Cotton Candy, the first ever winner of the reality competition television series. Startattle.com – The Masked Dancer.
Before the reveal, Sloth danced to “Ballroom Blitz” by The Sweet. He managed to come ahead of Tulip, who ended up in Third Place, but he eventually lost to Cotton Candy.
Some fans of The Masked Dancer fans knew who Sloth is prior to his unmasking. Among the panelists, Paula Abdul and Brian Austin Green were able to correctly guess the celebrity behind the Sloth mask.
So who is Sloth on The Masked Dancer?
The Sloth was revealed as Ukrainian-American Latin-ballroom dance champion, choreographer, and instructor Maksim Chmerkovskiy, widely known as one of the professional dancers on the American television series Dancing with the Stars.
Prior to his unmasking, Sloth answered the final questions of the panelists.
Sloth told Ashley Tisdale that he has hosted a big event. He answered “Yes” when Paula Abdul asked him, “Have we ever seen you with your shirt off?” He told Ken Jeong that he has been on the cover of a major magazine. He replied to Brian Austin Green that he’s more than 35 years old.
Host Craig Robinson then asked the panelists for their final guesses as to who Sloth is.
Paula Abdul said that the L clue made her think that Sloth could have been American actor, dancer, and singer-songwriter Matthew Morrison from Glee. But she said that the clue of U on the crane, meant that Sloth is from Ukraine and that the pita bread points to his wife Peta Murgatroyd. Paula was certain that Sloth is Maksim Chmerkovskiy.
Brian Austin Green noted that in the clues, Sloth said he waltzed in the show like a pro. From his performances, Brian said that Sloth is clearly a professional dancer. He thought that Sloth could be Val Chmerkovskiy, the brother of Maksim Chmerkovskiy. But with the clue of a baby sloth, Val is out of the picture since he does not have a baby yet. Brian then agreed with Paula that Sloth is Maksim Chmerkovskiy.
Ken Jeong said that from the clue packages like Broadway, he thought Sloth could be American actor and singer Jonathan Groff. With the DR clue, he thought of American actor and race car driver Patrick Dempsey. But he said everything is screaming Channing Tatum. He said that Sloth is tall and funny like Channing. He said the sign Jump Street refers to 21 and 22 Jump Street with Jonah Hill and the Magic Mike theme all point to Channing as the Sloth.
Ashley Tisdale started off with American singer, songwriter, and dancer Jason Derulo because of Sloth’s Tiktok move. Then she went to American actor, comedian, producer and writer Will Ferrell because of the ribbon dancing. But with the Broadway leading man clues, and with Sloth obviously a trained dancer with lots of charisma, she said Sloth could be Australian actor, singer, and producer Hugh Jackman.

Maksim Chmerkovskiy said being on The Masked Dancer was absolutely the best experience. “Sloth is my alter ego now,” he said.
Clues about the Sloth were explained after the reveal. The blue and yellow beakers were a note to the colors of the Ukrainian flag, Maksim’s homeland. The amber was a nod to his dance partner Amber Rose on Dancing With the Stars. The word up clue “Broadway” referred to Maksim starring in the Broadway Dance Productions “Burn the Floor & Forever Tango”. The stethoscope clue refers to his appearance on General Hospital. The “Glee” toothpaste, because he partnered with Heather Morris (Brittany Pierce on Glee) on Dancing With the Stars. The clue “Dental Whitening Tooth System” literally stands for DWTS.
Maksim Chmerkovskiy (age 41) was a competing pro on Dancing With the Stars for 17 Seasons of the show. He made it to the final round five times, with two runner-up and two third-place finishes. On May 20, 2014, Chmerkovskiy, paired with Olympic ice dancer Meryl Davis, won his first Dancing with the Stars title.
The Masked Dancer is an American reality competition television series that premiered on Fox on December 27, 2020. Craig Robinson hosts the show, with Ken Jeong, Paula Abdul, Brian Austin Green, and Ashley Tisdale serving as panelists. Like The Masked Singer’s format, celebrity contestants wear head-to-toe costumes and face masks that conceal their identities, but perform alongside a “masked partner”.
