Cruella is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution and follows a young grifter named Estella (Emma Stone), a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the fashion legend Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable, and revenge-bent Cruella. This American crime comedy film is directed by Australian filmmaker Craig Gillespie (Mr. Woodcock, Lars and the Real Girl, Fright Night, Million Dollar Arm, The Finest Hours, and I Tonya) with a screenplay written by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, from a story by Aline Brosh McKenna, Kelly Marcel, and Steve Zissis. It is based on the character Cruella de Vil, introduced in Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians and Walt Disney’s 1961 animated film One Hundred and One Dalmatians. Emma Stone stars as the titular character, with Emma Thompson, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, and Mark Strong in supporting roles.

Cruella is produced by Andrew Gunn, Marc Platt, and Kristin Burr. Emma Stone and Glenn Close, who played Cruella in the 1996 live-action remake and its sequel, also serve as executive producers on the film, along with Jared LeBoff, Aline Brosh McKenna, Jessica Virtue, and Michelle Wright.
