The Cricket was unmasked during the The Group A Playoffs on The Masked Dancer Season 1 on January 20, 2021.
Before the unmasking, Cricket peformed to “This Is How We Do It” by Montell Jordan. The Cricket got the least amount of votes when he was pitted against Exotic Bird, Hammerhead, and Tulip, and failed to advance to the Super Six. Startattle.com – The Masked Dancer.
Paula Abdul was the only panelist who was able to guess the celebrity behind the Cricket mask.
So who is Cricket on The Masked Dancer?
The Cricket was revealed as American singer, songwriter, actor, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist, Brian McKnight.
Prior to the reveal, Cricket answered the questions from the panelists.
The Cricket told Ashley Tisdale that he has been famous for a long time. In response to Brian Austin Green’s question, Cricket revealed that he had won an award for his craft. He replied to Ken Jeong that he is not known for a multitude of things and answered in the affirmative to Paula Abdul’s query if he has baby crickets.
Ashley Tisdale said there’s a lot of swimmer vibes, but she’s still leaning towards American actor, model, producer, entrepreneur, and venture capitalist Ashton Kutcher. She said Ashton played a swimmer in The Guardian and that he was also in The Butterfly Effect, which she thinks refers to the famous butterfly swim move. She said all the Vegas clues also point to Ashton Kutcher, who also starred with Cameron Diaz in What Happens in Vegas.
Ken Jeong agreed with Ashley about the swimming background and thinks that Cricket is American former competitive swimmer and the most successful and most decorated Olympian (with 28 medals) of all time, Michael Phelps. He noted that Cricket is tall and that clues showing gold bars refers to Phelps’ Olympic gold medals. The PH in the clues, he thinks, refers to the level of acid in pool water.
Brian Austin Green agreed with Ashley and Ken that Cricket is definitely a swimmer, but he thinks it’s American competitive swimmer and 12-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte. He said all the references to the pool, racing, medals, all point to Ryan Lochte.
Guest panelist Rob Lowe agreed with Brian and thinks that Cricket is also Ryan Lochte, based on the clues presented in the package.
Paula Abdul thinks the celebrity behind the Cricket mask is a singer. She said that “Back at One” and “Love of My Life” are Brian McKnight songs. She also knows that Brian McKnight has “baby crickets”. Paula definitely thinks that Cricket is Brian McKnight.

Ken Jeong commented that they had wanted McKnight for a long time on The Masked Singer. So why did McKnight join The Masked Dancer and not The Masked Singer? He said, “The way I sound, you probably would be able to pick me. With this, even though those were the most obvious clues on planet Earth… But it was fun because nobody knew it was me except Paula.” He also said being anonymous is great because he does not dance.
Clues about the Cricket were explained after the reveal. The bombs in Cricket’s package were a hint to his song “You Got the Bomb”, from his best-selling album Anytime. The Knight is in reference to Brian’s last name, McKnight. The numbers 19 and 98 were a clue to the year 1998 when Brian released his first album with Motown. The Dancer’s Clock Masks were a reference to Brian’s hit song “Back at One.”
Brian McKnight (age 51) is best known for his strong falsetto and belting range. His work has earned him 16 Grammy Awards nominations, the third artist following Zubin Mehta and Snoop Dogg for the record of most Grammy nominations without a win. McKnight has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide and his discography consists of 15 studio albums, six compilation albums, more than 40 singles and 19 music videos.
The Masked Dancer is an American reality competition television series that premiered on Fox on December 27, 2020. Craig Robinson hosts the show, with Ken Jeong, Paula Abdul, Brian Austin Green, and Ashley Tisdale serving as panelists. Like The Masked Singer’s format, celebrity contestants wear head-to-toe costumes and face masks that conceal their identities, but perform alongside a “masked partner”. The show began as a recurring segment on Ellen DeGeneres’ daytime talk show which spoofed The Masked Singer.
The series features 10 contestants who have sold more than 38 million albums worldwide, 20 Emmy Awards wins, 20 Grammy nominations, 10 World Dancing titles, five New York Times Best-Selling Author titles, four Olympic gold medals, and three apoearances in Broadway shows.
