First of all, you’re both very aggressive vocally, you know. And you’re both sneaking up on something. Crouching. Squatting down here, crouching down. But, yeah, trying to catch a rabbit or something.
One thing tips this in Ryan’s favor for me and that is that mic pack. To be able to not even acknowledge it — he didn’t care. He was singing the song. He was focused on what he had to do. And that was incredible.
Gwen Stefani’s comment
This one was my biggest surprise Battle because when you have a song that’s quite linear, you have to, like, somehow figure out a way to make it interesting the whole way through. You, guys, really worked so hard. It was very energetic in a way I never expected it to be.
Liam, one thing I love about you is just your spirit and your energy, and it would be fun to see what else you can do with that.
Ryan, today was a shock for me. I didn’t know you had the showmanship that you showed me today. Like, it was so good. Like, it was so tasteful. In rehearsals, I didn’t see that in you at all. That was really, really good.
John Legend’s comment
Liam, your range is probably the most impressive thing about your performance. And your gift as a vocalist.
Ryan, I particularly enjoy your tone of voice. It’s a little bit more of my style. I think style and tone-wise, I would side with you. But, range-wise and power, I would side with Liam.
Kelly Clarkson’s comment
I mean, y’all have to feel awesome. That was a physical thing, too. And you [Ryan] were fighting this mic pack. It was awesome, though. You were like Beyonce. Nothing stopped you. You just kept going. It was amazing.
Ah, Liam, you are so intense. It was really good. Your range is really great. And it’s not even that you go into a falsetto, you literally — it’s still chest up there. And it was really, really nice.
Ryan, you are my cup of tea as a vocalist. I want to hear you sing Ray LaMontagne. I want a glass of wine while listening. I mean, I just love your vibe.
I think you both did a great job. But, style-wise, I really genuinely love your [Ryan] voice.
