The Dry follows Aaron Falk (Eric Bana), a Federal agent who returns to his hometown after an absence of over twenty years to attend the funeral of his childhood friend, Luke (Martin Dingle Wall), who allegedly killed his wife and child before taking his own life – a victim of the madness that has ravaged the community after more than a decade of drought. When Falk agrees to stay and investigate the crime, he opens up an old wound – the death of 17- year-old Ellie Deacon. Falk begins to suspect these two crimes, separated by decades, are connected. He struggles to prove not only Luke’s innocence but also his own, and finds himself pitted against prejudice and the rage of a terrified community.
This drama crime thriller is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Robert Connolly (The Bank, Three Dollars, Balibo, Paper Planes and Underground: The Julian Assange Story). Its screenplay is written by Robert Connolly and Harry Cripps, adapted from the multi-awarded bestselling novel of the same name by Australian author Jane Harper.

The film rights for The Dry were optioned by producers Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea in 2015 and the film is produced by Papandrea’s production company, Made Up Stories. In November 2018, it was announced that Eric Bana would star in the lead role of Aaron Falk, with Genevieve O’Reilly and Keir O’Donnell in supporting roles. Principal photography took place in the state of Victoria, including the Wimmera region.
The Dry was scheduled for release on August 27, 2020 but was delayed due to the coronavirus or COVID-19 pandemic. It will be released by Roadshow Films in Australia on January 1, 2021. No release date has been set for USA.
