Kaitlyn and Artem got a score of 27 (9, 9, 9) from judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough, and Bruno Tonioli, giving them a SAFE result and advancing them to the next round. Getting the second highest score for the “80s Night” round, Kaitlyn and Artem currently holds the top spot in the competition with a total score of 117 points and an average of 23.4. Following them in 2nd spot is Nev Schulman and his professional partner Jenna Johnson, with a total score of 115 points and an average score of 23.

Season twenty-nine of Dancing with the Stars premiered on September 14, 2020 on the ABC network.
Continuing from last season, the couples were revealed on the season premiere. During The Bachelor: Greatest Seasons – Ever!, Season 11’s Bachelorette, Kaitlyn Bristowe, was announced as the first celebrity participant. On August 24, 2020, it was reported that Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean, would be a participant. He was later officially revealed on August 27. On August 29, 2020, it was reported that Anne Heche, Jesse Metcalfe, and Vernon Davis would be celebrity participants in the season. The other celebrity participants were revealed on Good Morning America on September 2, 2020.
The season’s lineup of fourteen professional dancers was announced on Good Morning America on August 18, 2020, with the fifteenth professional announced on August 24. Ten professionals from last season will return, along with Sharna Burgess, Artem Chigvintsev, and Keo Motsepe, all of whom last competed in season 27. Two new pros will be added, being Daniella Karagach, previously a featured dancer, and Britt Stewart, a former troupe member, who will be the first black female to become a pro. Lindsay Arnold and Witney Carson, who are both pregnant and are due to give birth in November and January respectively, will not be returning as pros this season.
It was announced on July 13, 2020 that Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews would not be returning as hosts for the season. The next day, Tyra Banks was announced as the new host and also as an executive producer of the show.
On September 8, 2020, it was announced that Derek Hough will fill in Len Goodman’s judging position. Goodman is unable to travel because of COVID-19 pandemic travel restrictions, but will still be appearing in certain prerecorded video segments.
