Jamie New (Max Harwood) is 16 and doesn’t quite fit in. He dreams of becoming a drag queen instead of pursuing a “real” career. Uncertain about his future, Jamie knows one thing for sure: he is going to be a sensation. Supported by his loving mom and his amazing friends, Jamie overcomes prejudice, beats the bullies and steps out of the darkness, into the spotlight.
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is a 2021 LGBT musical drama film by Jonathan Butterell in his feature directorial debut. Its screenplay is written by Tom MacRae and Dan Gillespie Sells, based upon the musical of the same name, inspired by the real life story of Jamie Campbell. The film stars Max Harwood, Richard E. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is produced by Mark Herbert, Peter Carlton, and Arnon Milchan.
The film was announced in May 2018. In June 2019, it was announced that Max Harwood, Richard E. Grant, John McCrea, Sharon Horgan, Sarah Lancashire and Shobna Gulati had joined the cast of the film, with Jonathan Butterell directing from a screenplay by Tom MacRae and Dan Gillespie Sells. Principal photography began in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England on June 24, 2019.
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie was initially set to be released in theaters on October 23, 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Its schedule was then moved to February 26, 2021, but was again postponed. Following delays in the planned theatrical release dates, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie was finally released in select theatres in the United States on September 10, 2021, followed by a worldwide streaming release on September 17, 2021 via Amazon Studios on Amazon Prime Video.
