All of the coaches thought that Carter was a girl and they were shocked to learn he’s a 14-year-old bedimpled boy. He is the second contestant this season, (the first one being John Holiday) who sounded like a female and surprised the coaches as they turned to see a male auditionee onstage.
Coaches John Legend and Gwen Stefani turned around for Carter. His choice between the two will be revealed during the airing of The Blind Auditions Part 3 on October 26, 2020 at 8PM EST.
UPDATE: Carter Rubin ultimately picked Gwen Stefani as his coach.

“Before You Go” was released as a single from the extended edition of Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi’s debut studio album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent (2019). It reached number one on the Irish Singles Chart in November 2019 and on the UK Singles Chart in January 2020. The song peaked at number 5 on Billboard’s US Adult Top 40.

Judges’ Comments:
Gwen Stefani exclaimed “You do not look like your voice, okay? Just so you know. She later said she cannot believe what she is seeing and hearing and that it is a shock. In her pitch, Gwen said her son is 14 years old, so she could be like a mom figure for Carter and he could feel very comfortable around her. “I loved your voice. When you got into your real full, full voice, the tone was so beautiful. It was shocking to me.” Gwen said she could help Carter being on TV ang being able to have that stage presence. She added, “You’re gonna be picking songs that need to be age appropriate. The song maybe something that you didn’t experience yet. I can help you to wrap your head around that emotion and your style and how you’re gonna dress and present yourself. I would love to be doing that for you.”
Kelly Clarkson loves Carter’s dimples, and said he has the most incredible smile she has possibly ever seen on any human. “You have a really great voice, especially finding out that you’re 14. That’s insane,” she said.
Blake Shelton asked, “Where is the person who was singing?” right after he turned his chair. He said Carter is an incredible singer. He heard a few things that made him think that he was younger. “But I didn’t think you were that young, you know?”
John Legend said he turned very early on for Carter. “You sounded polished. You sounded strong. Your voice has control, which a lot of people your age wouldn’t have, and your tone is just piercing and brilliant, and it just shimmers out there,” he told the young singer. He later said that Carter is the youngest person he ever turned for on the show and he admitted he’s a little too snobbish to turn. He said most of the young people who come on the show are talented but don’t have the control. He would love Carter to be the youngest person he had ever coached on The Voice.
The nineteenth season of the American reality television series The Voice premiered on October 19, 2020, on NBC. Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and John Legend returned as coaches for their nineteenth, sixth and fourth season, respectively. Gwen Stefani rejoined the panel for her fifth season, after being replaced by Nick Jonas last season. Meanwhile, Carson Daly returned for his nineteenth season as host.
