The Boys in the Band follows a group of gay friends who gather for a birthday party in 1968 New York City. They find the drinks and laughs interrupted when an uninvited visitor from the host’s (Jim Parsons) past, a potentially closeted college roommate (Brian Hutchison), turns the evening upside down. A drunken game soon leave them reckoning with unspoken feelings and buried truths.
This American drama film is directed by Joe Mantello (Love! Valour! Compassion!), based on the 1968 Tony Award-winning play of the same name by Mart Crowley, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Ned Martel. It stars Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells, Charlie Carver, Robin de Jesús, Brian Hutchison, Michael Benjamin Washington, and Tuc Watkins.

On April 18, 2019, Ryan Murphy announced on Instagram in April 2019 that the play The Boys in the Band would be adapted for Netflix, as part of his $300 million deal with the streaming platform. Murphy confirmed that Joe Mantello, the director of the 2018 revival of the play, would also direct the film version. It was also confirmed that the cast of the 2018 Broadway revival would reprise their roles for the movie, making the film have a cast of entirely openly gay actors.
