Interstellar is a 2014 epic science fiction film directed, co-written and produced by Christopher Nolan. It stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, Matt Damon, and Michael Caine. The film is set in a dystopian future where humanity is struggling to survive. It follows a group of astronauts who travel through a wormhole near Saturn in search of a new home for mankind.

Brothers Christopher and Jonathan Nolan wrote the screenplay of Interstellar, which had its origins in a script Jonathan developed in 2007. The film is produced by Christopher Nolan with his wife, Emma Thomas, through their production company Syncopy, and with Lynda Obst through Lynda Obst Productions. Caltech theoretical physicist Kip Thorne served as an executive producer and acted as scientific consultant. Thorne also wrote a tie-in book, The Science of Interstellar.
Principal photography for Interstellar began in late 2013 and took place in Alberta (Canada), Iceland and Los Angeles.
Interstellar premiered on October 26, 2014, in Los Angeles, California. The film had a worldwide gross of over $677 million (and $710 million with subsequent re-releases). It is the tenth-highest-grossing film of 2014. At the 87th Academy Awards, Interstellar won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, and was nominated for Best Original Score, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing and Best Production Design.
