The Garden Left Behind traces the relationship between a young Mexican trans woman named Tina (Carlie Guevara) and her grandmother Eliana (Miriam Cruz), as they navigate Tina’s transition and struggle to build a life for themselves as undocumented immigrants in New York City.
As Tina begins the process of transitioning, Eliana struggles to understand her and fears that their life together in America is no longer what they hoped for. Tina finds fellowship in a small but mighty transgender group and becomes an outspoken advocate. Facing violent threats, insurmountable medical costs, questions about her legal immigration status, and increasing skepticism from the man she loves, Tina begins to lose all hope. Unknowingly, she has also become the only inspiration for a shy young man who has been watching her closely from afar.
The Garden Left Behind is a powerful drama directed by Brazilian filmmaker Flavio Alves, in his first feature film. Alves also co-wrote the screenplay with John Rotondo. It stars Carlie Guevara, Danny Flaherty, Michael Madsen, Ed Asner, and Miriam Cruz.

The Garden Left Behind became the first independent film to be funded substantially through donations and sales via eBay.
The film was selected as one of ten films by IFP to be developed in their 2017 Narrative Lab project. The Garden Left Behind has also received support from organizations such as GLAAD, PFLAG, NALIP, New York Foundation for the Arts, New York Council for the Arts, The Film Society of Lincoln Center, Trans Filmmakers Project, and Jerome Foundation.
In the spring of 2016, newcomer Carlie Guevara was cast in the lead role of Tina in the spring of 2016. The film cast transgender actors in all transgender roles as well as Latinx performers in all Latinx roles, and bilingual performers/native Spanish language-speakers in Spanish-speaking roles.
The Garden Left Behind premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in March 2019, where it won the Audience Award. Since then, the film has received over 20 awards at festivals around the US and the world, including Jury Awards at the Nashville Film Festival, Woodstock Film Festival, and Heartland Film Festival.
