Lily (Susan Sarandon) and Paul (Sam Neill) summon their loved ones to their beach house for one final gathering after Lily decides to end her long battle with neurological disease ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) on her own terms. The couple is planning a loving weekend complete with holiday traditions. But the mood becomes strained when unresolved issues surface between Lily and her daughters Jennifer (Kate Winslet) and Anna (Mia Wasikowska). Lily’s story is ultimately one of hope, love and a celebration of life.

Blackbird had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2019. Screen Media Films acquired distribution rights to the film in May 2020. It is scheduled to be released on September 18, 2020, by Screen Media Films.
The remake of Silent Heart was announced in July 2018. Kate Winslet, Diane Keaton, and Mia Wasikowska were cast to play as members of the family. Roger Michell was announced as director. Keaton was later replaced by Susan Sarandon and Sam Neill, Rainn Wilson, Bex Taylor-Klaus and Lindsay Duncan cast in supporting roles.
Blackbird won the Audience Award for US Cinema Indie at the Mill Valley Festival Award 2019. It was also nominated for Best Film at the San Sebastian International Film Festival 2019.
