The Rental follows two couples on an oceanside getaway who grow suspicious that the host of their seemingly perfect rental house may be spying on them. Before long, what should have been a celebratory weekend trip turns into something far more sinister. Well-kept secrets are exposed and the four old friends see each other in a whole new light.
This unnerving, sophisticated American horror thriller film is the directorial debut of actor turned filmmaker Dave Franco. The screenplay is written by Franco and Joe Swanberg, based on a story by Franco, Swanberg, and Mike Demski. It stars Dan Stevens, Alison Brie, Sheila Vand, Jeremy Allen White, and Toby Huss.

Dave Franco, Elizabeth Haggard, Ben Stillman, Teddy Schwarzman, Joe Swanberg, Christopher Storer are serving as producers of The Rental, under their Ramona Films and Black Bear Pictures banners, respectively. Michael Heimler and Sean Durkin serve as executive producers.
In March 2019, it was announced that Alison Brie, Dan Stevens, Sheila Vand and Jeremy Allen White had joined the cast of the film. Principal photography began on April 22, 2019.
IFC Films acquired distribution rights to the film in April 2020. The Rental is scheduled to be released in select theaters and on VOD on July 24, 2020.

From 2017 to 2019, he has starred as David Haller in the FX series Legion. In 2018, he starred in the Netflix horror-thriller Apostle.
Alison Brie (age 37) plays the role of Michelle in The Rental. Brie is best known for the TV series Community (2009-2015), Mad Men (2007-2015), BoJack Horseman (2014-2020), and GLOW (2017-present), for which she received nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy. Her film credits include Scream 4 (2011), The Lego Movie (2014), Get Hard (2015), Sleeping with Other People (2015), How to Be Single (2016), The Little Hours (2017), The Disaster Artist (2017), The Post (2017), Promising Young Woman (2020), and Horse Girl (2020).
