Chris Sebastian (age 31) of Team Kelly performed “Before You Go” by Lewis Capaldi during the semi-final round on The Voice Australia 2020 (Season 9).
“Before You Go” was released as a single from the extended edition of Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi’s debut studio album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent (2019). It reached number one on the Irish Singles Chart in November 2019 and on the UK Singles Chart in January 2020. The song peaked at number 5 on Billboard’s US Adult Top 40.
Coach Kelly Rowland picked Chris Sebastian over Mark Furze, bringing him through the Grand Finale. Chris will compete with Johnny Manuel of Team Guy, Stellar Perry of Team Delta, and Siala Robson of Team George in the Grand Finale.

Chris Sebastian, who happens to be the brother of Coach Guy Sebastian, said during the rehearsals that he always has to prove himself, even just to be taken seriously. For a long time he felt that he was in Guy’s shadow. His coach, Kelly Rowland, said she knows how that feels, being in the girl group (Destiny’s Child) with Beyoncé. She said it would be a lie if she’d say the comparison with Beyoncé never bothered her. “There was a whole decade…that it was like the elephant in the room but the thing that was constantly beyond my shoulder.”
Kelly encouraged Chris by saying, “This is your opportunity to carve your own path even with him sitting in that chair down there.”
Chris Sebastian is an ‘All-Star’ contestant, having joined The Voice Australia Season 1 and making it up to the semi-finals, with Seal as Coach. He got a four-chair turn during his audition for the current season, and picked Kelly as his coach over his brother Guy Sebastian.
The Voice Australia was renewed for a ninth season right after the end of the eighth season. It was announced that all coaches would return for the new season.
The ninth season of The Voice Australia begun airing on May 24, 2020. For the first time in the show’s history all of the coaches are returning: Delta Goodrem for her eighth, Kelly Rowland and Boy George for their fourth and Guy Sebastian for his second. Following the exit of Sonia Kruger, Darren McMullen, who hosted the first three seasons, returns with new co-host, Renee Bargh.
The show is part of the television franchise The Voice and is structured as three phases: blind auditions, battle rounds and live performance shows. The show added another phase in 2017: the knockouts between the blind auditions and the battles. The winner receives a recording contract with Universal Music or EMI (2019) as well as A$100,000 and other prizes.
