Isolated from the outside world, fifteen-year-old Lara (Hannah Rae) lives in seclusion on a vast country estate with her father and strict governess Miss Fontaine (Jessica Raine). Late one evening, a mysterious carriage crash brings an enigmatic young girl named Carmilla (Devrim Lingnau) into their home to recuperate. Lara immediately becomes enchanted by this strange visitor who arouses her curiosity and awakens her burgeoning desires.
Carmilla is a 2019 British romantic horror film written and directed by British filmmaker Emily Harris (Borges and I, Paragraph, Love is Thicker Than Water). It stars Jessica Raine, Tobias Menzies, Hannah Rae, Greg Wise and Devrim Lingnau. Set in the late 18th century, the screenplay is inspired by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s 1871 Gothic vampire novella of the same name.

Carmilla had its world premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on June 28, 2019, where it earned a nomination for Best Film. When it played at the Chicago International Film Festival, film director Emily Harris was nominated for the Gold Q-Hugo award.
Film Movement will release Carmilla in virtual cinemas in the US on July 10, 2020. The film was originally set to be released in the United Kingdom on April 3, 2020, but has been postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In May 2020, Film Movement acquired US distribution rights to the film.
Jessica Raine and Tobias Menzies were reported to have joined the cast of the film in August 2017. Principal photography began in East Sussex on September 11, 2017.
English actress Jessica Raine (age 38) portrays Miss Fontaine in the film. Raine is known for playing midwife Jenny Lee in the first three series of BBC One drama Call the Midwife. Her film credits include Robin Hood (2010), The Woman in Black (2012), and Benjamin (2018).
English stage, TV, and film actor Tobias Menzies (age 46) plays the role of “Doctor” in the film. Menzies is best known for his dual roles of Frank and Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall in STARZ’s Outlander, which earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination. Menzies also played notable roles in HBO’s Rome and in Game of Thrones. Menzies also portrays Prince Philip in the third and upcoming fourth season of Netflix’s series The Crown.
Portraying the role of Lara is English actress Hannah Rae, who is best known for her 2016 feature film debut City of Tiny Lights, for which she was nominated for the Most Promising Newcomer Award at the British Independent Film Awards. Her film credits include Crushed and Fighting with My Family.
Playing the title role of Carmilla is actress Devrim Lingnau, whose film credits include Auerhaus (2019) and Immortality (2018).
