What We Do in the Shadows is an American comedy horror TV series created by Jemaine Clement, based on the 2014 film of the same name written by Clement and Taika Waititi, that premiered on March 27, 2019, on FX. The series follows four vampire roommates living in Staten Island in New York City for hundreds of years. It stars Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillén, and Mark Proksch. It is the second television series in the franchise following Wellington Paranormal.
In May 2019, FX renewed the series for a 10-episode second season which debuted on April 15, 2020.
Kayvan Novak portrays Nandor the Relentless, a vampire who is 757 years old and who was once a soldier of the Ottoman Empire. He regards himself as the leader of the group. He is a USA Basketball fan since 1992 and even wanted to become an American citizen solely to compete in the Olympics for America before the Macarena swept the country and took up all his time. He was also the king of a country called Al Quolanudar which is in Southern Iran where he was born.
Matt Berry plays the role of Laszlo Cravensworth, an English nobleman vampire who was turned by Nadja and is now married to her. He frequently disagrees with Nandor’s leadership and enjoys making music and topiary sculptures, especially of vulvas. He reveals to the other vampires in one episode that he was Jack the Ripper. He is revealed to be bisexual.
On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the first season of What We Do in the Shadows has an approval rating of 94%, based on 69 reviews while the second season has an approval rating of 100%, based on 21 reviews. On Metacritic, Season 1 has a weighted average score of 80 out of 100, based on 30 critics while the second season has a weighted average score of 81 out of 100, based on 9 critics, indicating “universal acclaim”.
