Palm Springs had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 26, 2020, where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition. It is scheduled to be released on July 10, 2020 by Neon and Hulu.
The project was initially announced in November 2018 after it secured a tax credit to film in California. Andy Samberg was then revealed as starring in the film. In March 2019, Cristin Milioti and J. K. Simmons joined the cast, while Camila Mendes was added in April, the same month when filming began.
Neon and Hulu acquired distribution rights, reportedly paying $22 million for the film and breaking the previous record for the highest sale from a film from Sundance.
Palm Springs has received critical acclaim. On review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, it holds an approval rating of 100% based on 27 reviews. On Metacritic, the film holds a rating of 83 out of 100, based on 10 critics, indicating “universal acclaim”.
