Cut Off follows the story of coroner Paul Herzfeld (Moritz Bleibtreu). While performing an autopsy, he discovers a note in the skull of a corpse with a phone number which belongs to his all but estranged daughter, whom he soon discovers has gone missing. The sinister clue leads Paul on the trail of a deranged killer, who has planted similar clues. Paul must uncover the clues in order to save his daughter.
Enlisting the reluctant help of an artist and an eager intern named Linda (Jasna Fritzi Bauer) Paul unravels a mystery whose threads run deep and that leads him to a solitary island cut off from the mainland by a winter storm.
Cut Off, originally titled Abgeschnitten, is a nerve-wracking psychological thriller based on the international best-seller by Sebastian Fitzek and medical examiner Michael Tsokos. It is directed by Christian Alvart and features a stellar cast including Moritz Bleibtreu, Jasna Fritzi Bauer, Lars Eidinger and Fahri Yardim.

Cut Off is the third film adaptation of a novel by Fitzek. Many scenes from the film were filmed at the original location on Heligoland while other scenes were shot in Berlin.
Michael Tsokos acted as a consultant for the film and some of his real colleagues were involved in the film. Tsokos and co-author Fitzek have cameo appearances as a professor at a lecture and as a lawyer for the forensic doctor.
Cut Off was released in Germany on October 11, 2018 and in Russia on March 14, 2019. On March 16, 2019 it was shown at the Cinequest Film Festival and on April 5, 2019 at the Cleveland International Film Festival in the USA. The movie played in other film festivals including BIFF, FrightFest and L’Étrange.
The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title “valuable”.
Jasna Fritzi Bauer was nominated for the Jupiter Award in the “Best German Actress” category.
