Council of Dads is an American drama TV series based upon the book The Council of Dads by Bruce Feiler. The series was created by Joan Rater and Tony Phelan and premiered on NBC on March 10, 2020.
In this transformative and inspirational new drama, family takes on a different meaning when Scott Perry (Tom Everett Scott), a loving father of five, has his entire life’s plan thrown into upheaval by an unexpected health scare. He calls on a few of his most trusted friends to step in as back-up dads to his growing family – just in case he ever can’t be there to do it himself. There’s Anthony (Clive Standen), Scott’s oldest and most loyal friend; Larry (Michael O’Neill), his tough-love AA sponsee; and Oliver (J. August Richards), his dedicated doctor and wife’s (Sarah Wayne Callies) dearest friend. These men agree to devote themselves to supporting and guiding Scott’s amazing family through all the triumphs and challenges life has to offer. Together, they discover that there’s more to being a father than anyone could do alone – and more to being a family than they ever thought possible.
On January 14, 2019, it was announced that NBC had given the production a pilot order under the name Council of Dads. The pilot was written by Joan Rater and Tony Phelan who executive produces alongside Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman, KristieAnne Reed. Producers are James Oh and Bruce Feiler while production companies involved with the pilot include Jerry Bruckheimer Television, Midwest Livestock Productions and Universal Television. In February 2019, it was announced that Sarah Wayne Callies and Clive Standen had been cast in the pilot’s lead roles. Alongside the pilot’s order announcement, in March 2019 it was reported that Michael O’Neill, Steven Silver and Emjay Anthony had joined the cast.
On May 7, 2019, it was announced that the production had been given a series order. Filming for the first season of Council of Dads was done in Savannah, Georgia.
