Tim Newman (age 19) from Horsham, a full-time musician since age 13, performed a mashup of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper and “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” by Whitney Houston during the Auditions round on Britain’s Got Talent 2020 (Season 14).
The audience and the BGT judges were impressed with Tim’s rendition. Simon Cowell gave him a standing ovation and praised his performance, as did the other judges.
Tim ultimately received 4 YES votes from the judges, advancing him to the next round of the competition.

“Girls Just Want to Have Fun” is a song written and first recorded in 1979 by American musician Robert Hazard. But it was popularized by American singer Cyndi Lauper, whose version was released in 1983 as the lead single from her debut studio album She’s So Unusual (1983). The song became Lauper’s breakthrough hit, reaching number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and becoming a worldwide hit throughout late 1983 and early 1984. The song received Grammy Award nominations for Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
“I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” is the first single (1987) from Whitney Houston’s second studio album, Whitney. Critics compared its musical arrangement to Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and to Whitney’s own song, “How Will I Know.” The song won the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 30th Grammy Awards and topped the charts in 13 countries including the US, Australia, Italy, Germany and the UK. It was Whitney’s first platinum single in the US.

Simon Cowell said he appreciates Tim Newman and thinks he has a good voice and a great personality. “I thought that was a really really good audition and I think that you have a lot and lots of potential. I really like it,” he said.
Amanda Holden thinks Tim’s got a load of talent and said that she’ll be hearing about him.
Alesha Dixon said, “Your tone is amazing. Your vibe is super cool and I need to see you today, that was a breath of fresh air. I loved it.”
David Walliams said, “Horsham’s greatest secret is out.” He said Tim is fantastic and has a lovely voice.
Britain’s Got Talent (aka BGT) is a televised British talent show competition, and part of the global Got Talent franchise created by Simon Cowell. It is hosted by Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly (also known as Ant and Dec), and produced by both Thames (formerly Talkback Thames) and Syco Entertainment, distributed by Fremantle, and broadcast on ITV every year. The show premiered on June 9, 2007 following the success of America’s Got Talent the previous year.
Every year, contestants of any age can audition for the contest with whatever talent they wish to demonstrate. Auditionees seek to impress a panel of judges – at present, consisting of Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and David Walliams – in order to secure a place in the live rounds of BGT. The winner gets a cash prize and a place within that year’s performances for the Royal Variety Performance before members of the British Royal Family.
Britain’s Got Talent 2020 (Season 14) will air in two parts, the first in April 2020 with pre-recorded audition episodes, while the second containing the live rounds to be aired at a later date. The series was split into two parts because of the Covid-19 pandemic or coronavirus outbreak and the resulting lockdown issued by the British government.
