Mike Newall (age 39), a gardener and a stand-up comedian from Greater Manchester, brought all the laughs on the stage during the Auditions round on Britain’s Got Talent 2020 (Season 14).
Backstage, Mike said he joined a band when he first left school but it didn’t go anywhere. He said the Manchester crowd likes what he does but only hopes it’s enough to be on board BGT.
At the opening chat, Mike said he does stand-up during weekends and although he earns a living from it, he needs to top up because he lives on his own.
At the start of his routine, Mike’s deadpan delivery didn’t get that much response from the audience. But as he went further into his routine, the audience laughed harder and harder and so did the BGT judges.
By the end of Mike’s performance, Alesha Dixon was laughing out loud. Mike ultimately got 4 Yes votes from the judges and advanced to the next round of the competition.

Judges Comments:
David Walliams said Mike Newall has a very very unique comic voice. “Brilliant material, I’ve never heard anything like that before so I thought it was fantastic.”
Alesha Dixon commented, “Your whole style is really cool, really interesting, really laid-back and the act just got funnier and funnier as it went along. So, well done.”
Amanda Holden said, “I think this is you, isn’t it? I mean do you ever jump, up and down?” Mike replied “not very often” to her question.
Simon Cowell said it was like being at an Oasis concert and the music runs out and Liam decides to tell a few jokes. “You’re really funny. And I’m with you with the bath bombs, I absolutely get it.” Simon thought the audition wasn’t going great but then Mike completely turned it around. “You’re one of my favorite comedians we’ve had on the show so far,” Simon said.
Britain’s Got Talent (aka BGT) is a televised British talent show competition, and part of the global Got Talent franchise created by Simon Cowell. It is hosted by Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly (also known as Ant and Dec), and produced by both Thames (formerly Talkback Thames) and Syco Entertainment, distributed by Fremantle, and broadcast on ITV every year. The show premiered on June 9, 2007 following the success of America’s Got Talent the previous year.
Every year, contestants of any age can audition for the contest with whatever talent they wish to demonstrate. Auditionees seek to impress a panel of judges – at present, consisting of Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and David Walliams – in order to secure a place in the live rounds of BGT. The winner gets a cash prize and a place within that year’s performances for the Royal Variety Performance before members of the British Royal Family.
Britain’s Got Talent 2020 (Season 14) will air in two parts, the first in April 2020 with pre-recorded audition episodes, while the second containing the live rounds to be aired at a later date. The series was split into two parts because of the Covid-19 pandemic or coronavirus outbreak and the resulting lockdown issued by the British government.
