Thomas Day, a 17-year-old football star from Tennessee, performed “Break My Heart” by Finneas during the Auditions round on America’s Got Talent 2020 (Season 15).
The high school football star is ranked seventh in the United States for kicking and said he was being recruited for the NFL. Asked why he chose to perform the song by Finneas he said, “You know it comes from like a really emotional part of my heart that I don’t like to expose, but the only way I can expose it is with this song.”
Thomas Day’s mesmerizing performance earned a standing ovation from the audience and AGT judges Simon Cowell and Sofia Vergara. The judges ultimately gave him three YES votes, advancing him to the next round of the competition.

Judges’ Comments:
Sofia Vergara said, “I think you’re very handsome and it’s great that a guy like you that is into sports is also into your music. Now I imagine it’s very different from what your other teammates do. So for you to explore that sensibility, it’s amazing. I loved it.”
Howie Mandel thinks Thomas has great charisma and great tone in his voice, but he thinks “this looked a little nervous and stiff to me.” Howie was booed and got several thumbs down from the audience.”
Heidi Klum said, “I love a young man who is not afraid to sing a small C song.” Heidi started the voting and gave the first Yes.
Simon Cowell thinks it was a really good first audition. “Judging by the reaction from the room, I think the same thing will be, people watching at home they’re gonna want you to do well in this competition, Thomas. But we see a lot of singers who come out here where I’m genuinely struggling going, well, ‘where do you go from this?’ But there are so many songs I could hear you reinterpreting so you’ve got your third yes.”
America’s Got Talent (AGT) Season 15 premiered in the United States on May 26, 2020, on NBC. For this season, AGT judges are Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, returning Heidi Klum, and newcomer Sofia Vergara.
This season is most notable for its production being affected by the COVID-19 or coronavirus pandemic in 2020, which impacted audition sessions.
