Megan Danielle (age 17) from Douglasville, Georgia performed “What Hurts the Most” during the Top 9 Performances on the semi-finals of The Voice 2020 (Season 18).
Coach Kelly Clarkson said Megan’s tone is so distinct. She said, “Every time you sing it’s like you hear, like, what a broken heart trying to fly sounds like. Like it sounds so beautifully broken and I just thank you. Whatever happens with this competition, I just thank you, for just being in my presence and just singing and reminding me of why I love to sing. And that’s a very powerful gift you’ve got, girl.”
Megan was Kelly’s choice for the Top 9 semi-finalists. But she landed in the bottom five after her semi-final performance and competed with Allegra Miles, Zan Fiskum, Joanna Serenko and Toneisha Harris for the Instant Save. Toneisha won the Instant Save and advanced to the finale while the rest, including Megan, were eliminated from the competition.

“What Hurts the Most” is a song initially recorded by country music artist Mark Wills in 2003 on his album And the Crowd Goes Wild. It was covered by Bellefire, then by pop singer Jo O’Meara who released it as a single in 2005. But it was country band Rascal Flatts‘ cover that became the most popular version of the song, with their single topping the U.S country and adult contemporary charts.
Season 18 of The Voice premiered at 8PM on February 24, 2020 on NBC and will air Mondays at 8 PM. John Legend, Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton returned as coaches for their third, fifth and eighteenth seasons, respectively. Nick Jonas joined the panel as a new coach, replacing Gwen Stefani. Meanwhile, Carson Daly returned for his eighteenth season as host.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, production has done some adjustments. For the first time ever, there will be only three weeks of Live Shows: the Playoffs, the Semi-Final, and the Finale. That’s a big drop compared to six weeks of Live Shows in Season 17.
The three weeks of live shows will also air as lives done at each contestant’s and coach’s home.
As to the voting system, the television audience will vote to save their favorite artists and artists who receive the fewest votes will be eligible for the “Instant Save”. America will then save their favorite performer by voting on “The Voice” app (available on iOS and Android) or NBC.com. The artists with the fewest number of votes will be “sent home” or eliminated each week.
